Richard J. Ericsson is a director of the firm and a member of our Environmental & Brownfields practice group.

Before joining the firm in 1986, Richard was an attorney with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, where he handled enforcement of Superfund and Spill Act cleanup obligations as well as air and water pollution regulatory requirements.

Richard’s legal services at the firm concentrate on counseling clients on the impact of environmental laws on business and real estate including brownfield redevelopment projects, regulatory compliance, oversight of environmental cleanups, obtaining redevelopment permits and funding, environmental insurance, and responses to governmental enforcement actions.

Richard has developed an expertise in advising lenders on environmental issues related to loan transactions, workout and foreclosure issues, lender liability issues and the practical aspect of addressing contaminated real estate. He also counsels borrowers seeking loans secured by environmentally troubled real properties.

Richard speaks regularly on environmental and brownfields issues to industry groups and at educational seminars in New Jersey and around the country. He is active in the ABA Section of Environment, Energy and Resources, where he is currently Chair of the Environmental Transactions and Brownfields Committee. Richard is also a member of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (NAIOP), serving on the Regulatory Affairs Committee of NAIOP's New Jersey chapter.

He served on the Union County Land Recycling Advisory Group concerning brownfields redevelopment issues. He is a member of the New Jersey State Bar Association Environmental Section.

Richard graduated from Skidmore College in 1978 and from Vermont Law School in 1981. He was admitted to the New Jersey bar in 1981. Prior to working with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, Richard served as a law clerk to Superior Court Judges Alan Rockoff and Joseph Bradshaw.

Richard’s interests include sailing, water sports and music.

Richard has been named a New Jersey “Super Lawyer” and is accorded Martindale-Hubbell’s highest AV rating. He is named in the Chambers USA Client Guide as a leader in his field.
